If you’re reading this you’re obviously very serious about your health. And you are right to be questioning the painkillers and generic exercises likely offered to you by various resources like the internet or even health care professionals. You won’t need me to tell you that painkillers don’t get to the bottom of these types of problems and worse yet, all they ever do is mask the pain, often making it worse in the long run.
If you’re suffering with daily, annoying pain in your frozen shoulder, the first thing I want you to know is that I am familiar with your problem, all of your concerns are real and you are looking in the right place for a solution to end it.
Frozen Shoulder pain is VERY serious!

Frozen shoulder typically develops slowly, and in three stages. Each stage can last a number of months.
- Freezing stage. Any movement of your shoulder causes pain, and your shoulder’s range of motion is becoming more and more limited.
- Frozen stage. Pain is still present and now your shoulder becomes even more stiff, and using it becomes more difficult.
- Thawing stage. The range of motion in your shoulder begins to improve.
The bones, ligaments and tendons that make up your shoulder joint are encased in a capsule like a balloon. Frozen shoulder occurs when this capsule thickens and tightens around the shoulder joint, thus restricting movement. There is an area of the capsule that has extra slack that allows shoulders to move freely move. This area of the capsule is called the redundant fold. This area gets completely stuck on its self and thus limits your shoulders range of motion!
There are now four reasons why this happens. These four reasons all lead to a weakened, unstable shoulder. When your brain and your sensors (proprioceptors) recognize the instability then this triggers the whole frozen shoulder response. Our brain sends the message to form adhesions and tighten the shoulder capsule. While this may sound like bad news this is our body working to protect itself from the alternative -which is a dislocated shoulder (a medical emergency)!
The Four Reasons Why.
First, posture is worsening (including a forward head and forward shoulder posture). This causes the joints to be misaligned, thus the unstable shoulder.
Second, the rotator cuff is atrophying due to the aging process and posture. Also, pain leads to muscle weakness. Finally, poor posture can cause nerve compression or even worse, a pinched nerve. This leads to more atrophy as muscles need nerves to stay strong and healthy.
Third, hormone levels are headed down hill. This is why this occurs mainly in women 40 and over. Estrogen is a very powerful anti-inflammatory. Inflammation leads to pressure and shoulder instability. Inflammation leads to the redundant folds getting stuck on themselves and inflamed.
Fourth is called the tipping point! Something that is considered the final straw. This is when even the slightest injury starts the whole frozen shoulder syndrome. I have had patients tell me that it was as simple as bumping into a wall, or sleeping on the shoulder wrong. So what I’m saying is that it’s really not about this tiny injury it’s more about the habits and events that led up to it!
Who is at risk:
- After surgery or injury.
- Most often in people 40 to 70 years old.
- More often in women (especially in postmenopausal women).
- Most often in people with chronic diseases.
So how do we fix it? In physical therapy we work to fix your posture. We also work on strengthening the rotator cuff. We use tape to place your shoulder back in alignment so this will stop the brain from sending the signal for more adhesions and tightening of the joint capsule. We also use the class four laser which neutralizes the chemicals that are causing all the pain. When this program gets going patients are very pleased with the faster progress that other professionals are providing. Most Health care professional do not know about this shoulder approach, as they have not gone through the special training.
