50 X’s ?!!?
You received an exercise handout after your therapy treatment which states you need to complete 50 repetitions of the prescribed exercise. Fifty!?!!!
We have three types of patients.
1—Fifty, I can’t do fifty. There’s no way I will ever be able to do fifty, so, I won’t do any at all.
2—Fifty. Sure I can do fifty and I’m going to do all of them right now no matter how bad it hurts.
3—Fifty? I can’t do fifty right now. I can do only 15, but I will start with that and add a few each week until I get to fifty.
If you have ever been given one of our exercise sheets you know our magic number is 50. Yes, we want 50 repetitions, but we don’t expect them the very first time you do the exercise. Therapy, even the home program, should be challenging but never painful or cause pain the next day. Remember, the rule of 5: Therapy should not cause pain while performing or later above YOUR 5/10 on the pain scale. If it does, you did too much and need to back off the repetitions or the intensity.
